Look at the attach - detach methods of each, IF you think you will be taking it on and off much. Have both demonstrated by someone familiar with doing it. Some of the frustration and time when doing these chores sometimes translates into wishing for something easier, and wishing you had known when buying or not buying one versus the other. Just a thought. ....

I think everybody is talking sub-frame mounts here, and the comments are real good. Although I have a 3ph hoe, I've heard that some sub-frame mounts prevent use of mid-mowers. Others require removal of the 3ph lift arms, and others simply take a lot of time. I also have a recollection that the JD mount is reported to be pretty easy. Anyway, years of struggling with a mount may make the $1000 more for a JD hoe seem like a bargain if it really is a lot easier than other mounts. ....

I have a 870 JD with a Great Bend loader... I have really abused it. I have totally destroyed the bucket and the bushings need to be replaced. I have only removed it three or four times in ten years. I think it is a really good piece of equipment. When I say I have abused it I mean I have really put it through hell over the years. Only design flaw is the grease fittings on the bucket pins are on the bottom. I dont know if I tore them out or if they were pressed/fell out by the pins when the bushings got worn. I would unscrew them and shorten them If I got another new one. I bought the loader and tractor new. It really is easy to take on and off... It takes about five minutes to unhook it. I just found the darn thing so handy that I never take it off. Don't want to stop to rebush the thing even. Pins are harder than the bushings the pins look good.

If they build a backhoe like my loader buy it. I use a homemade 3 point backhoe on mine that I built myself. Works well and a lot cheaper. ....

Ended up buying a 4500 JD with a great bend hoe. The hoe is a 3 pt. mount. A pain to put on until I got used to it. Blocking it up, etc. The hydraulics let it settle if I don't. It has a pto pump that's a pain. The dealer is going to put "power beyond" on the tractor at no charge to see if I like that better or not. Any input on that? Love the tractor and backhoe other wise. Kind of slow but the ground here is super dry now. Had a basement addition to dig. Got impatient with the slow hoe and used the loader to dig it. Ended up with a big ramp down to it but it turned out to be real handy for getting the blocks down etc. ....
